Why Choose a Balanced Approach with South Yorkshire Dog Training?

When it comes to dog training, two common methods are Positive Reinforcement Only and Balanced Training. While both utilise positive reinforcement techniques like rewards and redirection, we believe that positive reinforcement alone may not be enough, especially for dogs with behavioural issues.

The desire to engage in unwanted behaviours can sometimes outweigh a dog's motivation for rewards, leading to potential dangers such as fights, bites, or unsafe situations. Dogs also need structure and a strong leader to feel secure. If you struggle to control your dog's behaviour or handle stressful situations, they may not see you as a confident leader, affecting their sense of safety.

Consider the analogy of visiting someone's home with your child. If your child starts jumping on the furniture and knocking down items, would you ignore their behaviour? No, you would hold them accountable. The same principle applies to dogs. By establishing boundaries and expectations, you can shape their behaviour and create a harmonious environment.

It's important to note that balanced training requires skill and proper timing. Corrections and rewards must be administered correctly to be effective. For reactive dogs, rewarding them at the wrong time can reinforce the undesired behavior rather than curbing it.

At South Yorkshire Dog Training, we also specialise in working with high-drive working dogs and rescue dogs with severe issues. Many clients come to us after reaching a plateau with positive-only approaches. While we appreciate positive reinforcement, we recognise that a balanced approach may be necessary in certain cases. We are transparent about our training methods, equipment, and are always open to discussing why we choose a balanced approach.

If you have any questions or want to learn more about our training techniques, feel free to ask. We are here to help you and your furry companion thrive!
